Just the Two of Us – Recipe + Giveaway !

spaghetti and meatballs easy meal
Sponsored by Nuffnang

It’s a sad truth that I find preparing meals a chore, I’m never organised enough to plan ahead and then find it really frustrating to scrape something appetizing together that I actually want to eat. The Mr is rarely home for dinner as he usually works late most nights, so it’s just Emma and I every night for dinner – Just the Two of Us!

When Maggi asked me if I wanted to try out their new Just for 2 range I jumped at the chance. Finally a product designed for just two, not huge family sized portions where I have to throw most of it away.

We chose to make Spicy Tomato & Red Wine Meatballs with Spaghetti

Meatball ingredients
And talk about easy…
just a few extra ingredients required,
250g beef mince
1 onion, sliced thinly
400g tinned crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup (60ml) red wine
all ingredients I had on hand already
+ JUST FOR 2 Spicy Tomato & Red Wine Meatballs sachet.
spaghetti and wine
Extra glass of red wine for drinking (optional) *wink*
making meatballs recipe
Preparation and cooking was super simple.
Emma made the meatballs and I chopped the onion. We make quite a team.
cooking meatball sauce
1. Roll beef mince into 12 meatballs. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan, add meatballs, cook for 5 minutes or until browned, add onion, cook for a further 2 minutes or until softened.
2. Next I added the wine and let it simmer to cook off the alcohol.
3. Add MAGGI Spicy Red Wine Tomato Meatballs Recipe Mix and tomatoes, cook for a further 10 minutes. Serve with spaghetti.

It’s always fun to break the routine and have a special dinner for two, even if it’s just Emma and I, who says ‘Date Nights’ have to be just for couples. So the table was set for a ‘romantic’ meal, with an Italian twist.
A candle lit dinner for two, My Poppet style.

And when I think romance + spaghetti, the most romantic spaghetti and meatball eating movie scene immediately came to mind :)

But you probably want to know how it tastes. I was really pleasantly surprised by the depth of flavour, with a little spicy kick that is far from bland. Aimed at adult palates, which is a refreshing alternative to the usual boring fare I tend to serve up, I really enjoyed it. Emma eats whatever we do, I like to offer her a range of food flavours, so a little bit of spice was ok for her too.
kid eating spaghetti
It didn’t taste salty at all, which is my main concern with recipe bases, and contains no artificial colours, flavours or added MSG so it’s a healthy and quick alternative to other convenience meal options. (I am guilty of ordering too much take away!)

And the best thing? It’ only $1.99 which means that it’s a great pantry staple to have on hand. Find Maggi’s just for 2 products amongst the Recipe Base packets in the your local supermarket.

  • I can’t cook. I just do not know flavors and ingredients well enough to prepare more than a handful of “kid friendly” meals. My husband loves great food though and I want to make dinner for us to enjoy together. Anything that helps get the balance of taste right for me would be a godsend!

It would be great for those evenings I forget to prepare (read that every other day)ahead of time and husband is hungry.

  • Keren says:

How fantastic! I find it so hard to cook for just the two of us some days … even when I grab a ‘serves 4′ recipe and halve it we seem to end up with left overs for lunch the next day. I’m not sure if I could go with packet mix as a staple in my pantry (although it sounds like Maggi may have improved on the ingredients lists of days gone by), this would definitely be great for those tough, tired nights when take away ends up being the easy option.

  • CJ Jones says:

Sounds so so yummy, so going to go try this one

It would make it easier for the Friday nights when both myself and my husband are just too far past it to think about dinner but are so hungry for something good and don’t want to spend money on takeaway. It would be perfect for it.

It would make it so much easier for those nights when I’m stuck in traffic on the way home from work, still have to pick the two kids up from daycare, still have to pick up hubby from the train station, still have to go to swimming lessons….oh yeah and somewhere I’m upposed to whip up a fabulous meal……ha ha ha…..those night would usually be take away night but this lovely new product could save all that junk food. Yum

  • Felicity says:

As a not long married couple (just shy of 4 year)s we still haven’t learned the art of ‘serves 2′ and whilst leftovers are fabulous… leftovers that serve 6 people with ease means plenty of ‘oh not again’ remarks at the office and dining table. Whilst leftovers don’t phase me, my hubby turns his nose up at a dish after having 3 of the same meal leaving waste. But hey a Just for 2 hamper might make for the perfect date night- a cooking ‘class’ with Maggi and perhaps many more to come :)

  • Jaz says:

I’m a hard working student, that often finds the night slips away before myself or my hardworking partner even get the chance to think about filling our stomachs, this sounds like a great romantic, gormet and no-brainer choice for a lovely evening meal.

  • Dianna says:

Hi! I don’t seem to have time to think too much about what I’m putting on the table these days. My sweetheart has had another stroke and our days are kinda hectic and harried, so it’s usually something quit, easy, and bland, with no thought but behind it. And romance? What is that? It seems to faintly ring a bell, oh well. Anyway, thank you for the chance to win.

  • Hannah says:

I love cooking, but having the time to do a proper grocery shop is always an issue and so it tends to be boring basics. If I know I can grab one of these and have all the flavour there with none of the hassle I’m in! Would help clear out my spice cupboard a bit too – it takes up valuable room in a one bedroom apartment!

  • Stef says:

I’m a time poor Mum so quick meals are great. I also like simple food with few ingredients so 4 yr old Oscar can help me prepare & cook the odd meal. This one looks perfect for Mum & kid Date Night. Thanks!

  • Natalie says:

What a joy, a gift to help me slide into dinner prearations. Maggi Just for @ would allow me to slip on a fresh frock for dinner and maybe even a little lippie! How fun! My Great Grandma always talks of having the energy to dress for dinner… I guess these days, with work and kids its too easy to neglect the things that make a meal really special. What is it? I know, it’s dining, rather than just plain dinner.
    xx

  • Michelle says:

It would be perfect after that long day at work, when you get home late, and nothing is in the pantry…or fridge. Grab some mince from the freezer, a packet of Maggi’s Just for Two and there you have it – dinner just for me and my boyfriend!

  • Melissa Jones says:

It’s headache for me to cook ‘Just For 2′ meals, especially for only my 2 yrs old and me at lunchtime. If the meals are not tasty or have similar flavour, my boy will refuse to eat them. But he needs nutrition. Maggi would help me out and make simply meals sensational and easy to cook as well.

  • Lesley Mounsey says:

because sometimes I just can’t be bothered to think of what to cook at the end of the day! When I ask the other half what he wants – i’m not actually looking for what he wants – just ideas! This would be perfect to end the day with! And a little romance is never a bad thing!

  • Michelle says:

My Other half (only sometimes better half) travels ALOT, seriously I mean ALOT. When he is home we try to at least have one night when it is just the TWO OF US… aka date night… aka barry white in the background kinda night. Without the three kids, did I forget to mention them. Getting back to story… barry white kinda evenings do NOT go well with hours in the kitchen, slinky undies and steam…. even my iron know they dont mix!. This range…. means we can get down to business so much quicker wink wink if you know what I mean…. EATING!!! what were you thinking.

  • Sarah says:

My husband and I just had our first child last week, any help to make dinner easier would be appreciated. We don’t have a big freezer so extra portions aren’t always great. Meal bases for two is an excellent idea!

  • Aggie says:

2 things – it’s way too hot to use the stove/oven. (We’ll start in the fall.) And 2, I can’t cook. So my wonderful husband does it all on the grill. The problem is “sometimes” it’s a little overkill and lacking a bit of flavor. Maggi for 2 might entice him to let the flavor simmer without actually burning it. But, don’t tell him I said all that – it might hurt his feelings.

  • Merryl Chantrell says:

Maggi Just For 2 sounds like an all-in-one no waste husband friendly any night of the week meal :-)

  • Kim says:

I think if I left some Maggi Just for Two packets around, with the bottle of wine etc, my husband might surprise me by having just him cook a delicious tea, just for the two of us!

  • JoAnna says:

I don’t mind cooking, but I hate coming up with what to cook so this would make it easier to just have the stuff and make it!

  • karina l says:

I can cook up something tasty without having to slave away in the kitchen. Who has time these days when there is so much tv to watch!

  • Patti says:

My boyfriend & I are always stuck for new & easy dinner ideas. Having the Maggi Just for 2 in our cupboard would make it so simple since you just need to add a few fresh ingredients & VOILA – dinner!

  • Wendy Hatton says:

After a tiring day out- working or shopping or grand-baby sitting- anything tasty that creates just enough and needs a minimum of ingredients gets a big tick at my place.

  • sam greenwald says:

awsome it will benefit us , my wife cant cook ,finally a change for once

  • Deb Price says:

I like the idea of these Maggi products. I cook for just my daughter and myself. These would be new meals that we would try and be able to make faster with the aid of these products. Are they available in America? I found them on the Australia site. I hope they are!

  • Laurel says:

It’s often just me and hubby home for dinner these days! Something quick and delicious to cook for dinner would give me more to look forward to.

  • Stephanie Hobson says:

It would be very nice to have something new to add to our menus… it seems like I just cook the same things over and over. Despite the many recipes I have pinned! And there are two of us in our home these days.

  • Jacqui says:

I live with my mum and sometimes it would be nice if I could cook for her instead of the other way around! However my cooking skills are pretty..well lets just say I’m not to good! So this would make it so much easier if I can follow some simple, quick and easy steps and still get something that is tasty! Maybe not so romantic to be sharing a dinner with my mum but she’s my one and only love right now! :)

  • AmberB says:

I love cooking but I hate not knowing if I have all of the ingredients that I need to cook with. With Maggi Just for Two it is easy to see what is required and how much it will make.

  • I think Maggi would be great for those busy days when you come home and don’t have any inspiration to cook something special.

Love your pictures btw. Super cute.
