Summer themed novelty Christmas stocking DIYs three years in a row? Looks like My Poppet officially has a Christmas craft tradition!

Yes it’s that time of year again where festive decorations everywhere are winter themed with snow and fir branches. It all looks magical, except that in Australia, Christmas is in the middle of Summer! Poor old Santa has to sweat it out in a heavy fur trimmed suit, I’m sure he would much prefer an ice cream to a plate of milk and cookies. (Although sometimes us Aussies leave Santa a cold beer).

Last year I made Cactus Stockings, and the year before that it was Summer Fruit Stockings, but nothing says ‘Summer’ like an ice cream cone with all the trimmings.

Why don’t you make each family member a personalised ice cream Christmas stocking in their favourite flavour. I’ve gone for mint choc chip, vanilla choc top with crushed nuts and a cherry, and Emma’s favourite strawberry with rainbow sprinkles.

  • Sticky tape

How to make an Ice Cream Christmas Stocking

Cutting:

Pin patterns to felt and cut one ice cream top in colour/flavour of your choice.

On a double layer of taupe felt pin the stocking pattern and cut to make 2 stocking shapes. No seam allowance is needed.

From taupe felt cut hanging loop, a narrow rectangle about 5″x3/4″ (12.5cmx2cm).

Sewing:

To make waffle pattern on the front stocking piece, mark out a grid pattern with a ruler and tailors chalk. I’ve made the squares 3 x 3cm – but if you have an imperial ruler, 1″ will do.

With a narrow zig zag stitch, follow the chalk lines and sew on the grid pattern. If you don’t have time to machine sew, try adding lines with a fabric marker or paint instead.

I’ve used a quilting guide to help me keep the sewing straight where the markings were a bit faint. Gold thread added some extra sparkle!

All done. The stitching was a little time consuming, but I think the effect it gives is worth the effort.

Lay back and front of stocking pieces together and pin loop in between on an angle.

Sew around stocking edge, leaving the top open. A 1/4″ (0.5cm) seam allowance is fine. Your loop should be nice and secure.

TIP: If you don’t have a sewing machine you can always just hand stitch around the edge.

Once you’ve assembled the basic stocking, it’s time for the fun part – choosing your ice cream flavour. I’ve gone for Vanilla, Strawberry and Mint, but you could make any flavour you fancy.

Get creative with your toppings, add choc chips, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, crushed nuts and a cherry. I’ve added the choc sauce markings to the template if you are a fan of the choc top.

Lay out your toppings until you are happy with the design then glue onto the ice cream scoop piece.

TIP: Glueing on small pieces of felt like sprinkles and choc chips can get messy. I found it easiest to pour some glue onto a plate and then use a cotton bud to dab just a small amount to the felt piece.

Once your ice cream toppings are glued on, glue the top section onto the cone/stocking section. The top of the ice cream section should line up with the top of the stocking section.

All done! Don’t they just look smashing. Emma has already claimed the pink one with rainbow sprinkles. It makes a cute home for her favourite Shopkins doll.

Super cute idea! It’s always warm on Christmas for us, so the ‘usual’ decorations and stockings feel a bit silly. Something like this would work way better!
