Lounge Room Refresh: Design Mood Board

Now that all the hard work in the lounge room is done, it’s time for the fun bit – furnish and decorate!

Just a reminder of what my lounge room currently looks like:

It’s taken me a long time to work out how we want to use this space, and how I want it to feel. It’s tempting to make this room quite formal as it sits at the front of the house and doesn’t have a TV in it, but I’m not a formal person, so we’d probably never use it.

Mr Man suggested I turn it into a studio space. It was tempting, but I thought it wouldn’t be fair to commandeer one of the largest rooms in the house and fill it with craft junk. I like that my small sewing space helps me limit the amount of stuff I tend to accumulate.

So the vibe I’m going for is relaxed family space for playing, crafting, chatting and chilling out.

I haven’t started totally from scratch in regards to furniture (can’t afford that), so I’m blending old pieces, existing art work and my collections, with a new sofa, coffee table, chair and lighting.

Some of the new stuff is already on it’s way, other bits are on my wish list.

Here’s the mood board I’ve designed to see how all the elements look together, the inspiration for the main colour scheme came from a large artwork by my friend Madeleine Stamer which will hang over the fireplace.

Lounge room makeover Moodboard - mypoppet.com.au

  1. Bunny Facing Left by Madeleine Stamer (currently own). It’s the inspiration for the colour scheme, with lots of bright saturated colours in jewel tones. I also have a pile of other artwork that will go up on the opposite wall, gallery style. I need to get some of it framed which will be an expensive exercise. Why is framing so expensive?
  2. King Living Neo Sofa in Oxford Cyan fabric (on order to arrive in Feb 2018 – can’t wait). It took us such a long time time to find the right couch. We have ordered a slightly different configuration than pictured so it will hopefully fill the space perfectly. I initially wanted a grey couch but because the room is quite dark, all of the fabric samples looked really ‘greige’ and dirty. The cyan colour really adds life to the space, and it will hopefully wear better than a light coloured fabric. It’s a wool felt blend and I’ve paid extra for fabric protection so fingers crossed it will be easy to maintain.
  3. Brosa Blake Coffee Table (gifted to me by Brosa – on order). I’ve been looking for a large round coffee table for ages and this one is a whopping 1m in diameter. The perfect size for playing games and lego on. I’ll probably tuck a couple of storage baskets underneath it to keep all of Emma’s stuff tidy, and my knitting handy.
  4. Brosa Helene Tub Chair in Yellow Gold (wish list). I’m eyeing this chair off for a reading corner under the window to the right of the fireplace. We have a big yellow tapestry hanging in the adjoining room and I think it will help visually link both rooms to create a flow through.
  5. Fat Shack Vintage Twin Light Floor Lamp in Black (gifted by Fat Shack Vintage). I love the retro look of this lamp and it will be perfect to provide task lighting either behind the sofa or in the reading corner. When I’m knitting or crocheting, overhead lighting isn’t really bright enough to light my work properly, so a directional lamp is essential.
  6. Brosa Kare End Table Black (wish list). Because I need somewhere to put my cup of tea.
  7. Brosa Elementary Cushion in Pink Blush Velvet (wish list). I love a velvet cushion, it ads a little bit of luxury to the space. I have some vintage velvet fabric laying around so may make my own if I get a moment.
  8. Brosa Parla Large Cushion in Bone (wish list). I like how the quilted effect adds texture to the space.
  9. Vintage Oak Wood SideBoard (currently own). I bought a matching pair of these a couple of years ago at Vinnies for $90 each. They are beautifully custom made (for the original owner) and are currently living in my kitchen. I’ll be swapping the Vintage Mid Century Sideboard to the kitchen and 2 of these will sit in the window nook. They fit perfectly.
  10. Ikea Stockholm Rug (currently own). I know this rug is all over pinerest but I like the graphic boldness of it. My mum says it makes her dizzy when she looks at it. Once the coffee table and couch are on it, it will break up the dazzle effect and look really fresh.
  11. Vintage Ceramics (in my current collection). I’ve slowly been accumulating a small collection of mid-century ceramics which are really colourful. They will probably be displayed on the sideboard and mantle piece. If you want to start your own collection check out these pieces on Etsy.

So there you have it, my new lounge room design inspiration board. But what will it look like in the actual space?

Here’s a mock-up. What do you think?

What an inspiring post! I’m desperately keen to revamp my bedroom. I would put the voucher towards one of Brosa’s beautiful queen size frames, a gas lift one to better utilise the space underneath. I love your use of colour, it has given me confidence as I consider my own choices x

  • Priscilla says:

Your friend Madeleine Stamer’s artwork is bold and happy and colourful. It’s the perfect jumping off point for the room, and I think you did a wonderful job bringing in pieces that speak to each other. Looks great!

  • Jade O says:

What an amazing post and a very generous giveaway. I love summer and so happy I n send more time outdoors with the family. I might as well be comfy when I’m outdoors and the Corfu Outdoor Armchair looks so comfy, If i am lucky enough to win that where it will be going towards. All I need now is a cool refreshing drink!

  • Imogen says:

Loving your new lounge! I’ve been looking for an accent chair for my bedroom (we renovated last year) for ages and have been on the Brosa site and have been lusting over the Globe Armchair in Cosmic Anthracite Mystere Velvet. I really want a velvet covered chair for the bedroom as it has such a lovely comfy feel and I love the high back of the Globe armchair as we have a raked ceiling and need something with height for it to look proportional to the room.

  • Kate says:

Oh that couch is awesome… such a gorgeous colour!!
What I need is a new rug for our family room… but what I’d like is an upholstered bed head, and maybe a king sized bed to go with it! LOL

  • kate jennings says:

Our lounge room has a lonely corner that is just crying out for an armchair! And lo and behold the stunning Lucca armchair looks like it would fill that spot (and my heart!) so perfectly! Love the style and the quality. So many gorgeous pieces to drool over on Brosa!!

  • Adam says:

    Long and lean
    Globe chair
    anthracite grey velvet
    Smooth, soft and moody
    Elegantly stylish
    Just right
    Curl up and read
    In the bedroom corner

  • Taryn says:

Your lounge room will turn out beautifully!
I’ve been looking for a buffet/sideboard for years now to fit in our dining area.
Had never heard of Brosa but after checking out the website, the Thomas Sideboard is amazing! If I won, i’d put the winnings toward that. Great find with Brosa!

  • Shelby Sheehan says:

Hi Cintia! Loving your plan for the front room–it always makes me happy to see people choose sofas in interesting colours! Funnily enough I found Brosa recently and bought a chest of drawers from them and would be thrilled to win a voucher toward something else. I have my eye on the Calicut large wool rug in the orange and white chevron-type print. Recently I found a partially completed project amongst my mother-in-law’s sewing things that she can no longer use. The project includes a tropical print fabric in teal and orange on white. I am inspired to turn these into cushion covers to go on our newish sofa (in medium grey flannel fabric). I think the combination of orange, teal and medium grey would look perfect in our place.

  • karina l says:

I would put the money towards an Alexa Large Round Ottoman because I need something to rest my weary feet on.

  • Frances Kay Harrelle says:

After visiting the Brosa site I’m so in love with the furniture and great idea’s, to revamp my home. I would just love to win and start off with one of the great products at Brosa. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Narelle Dunn says:

I’m desperate to replace my current coffee table – it’s on wheels so my cup of tea and the remote control are always rolling just out of reach. This 8-month-pregnant lady is too tired to be dragging her ridiculously shaped body up off the couch and bringing the coffee table to heel every 15 minutes. Then, when it is close enough to reach, all I can see is the brown Kelpie hair which the white painted metal of the coffee table loves to suck out of the house’s atmosphere and attach to itself.
The Kaneko Coffee Table would fix both my problems so I could move onto obsessing about something else in my house that’s not quite right. There’s always something, right?!

  • Jo says:

Like yourself, Cintia, we have just finished redecorating our lounge room. We have a Californian Bungalow so the size and shape of the lounge has been problematic to work with, however we have reached a point where we feel we have achieved a winning combination – gorgeous timbers, Scandi styled soft furnishings plus a bit of quirk with our artworks and potted plants. One thing left to do…an entertainment unit. I’d choose the Meggs or the Cosmos sideboard to complete our look. I’m loving your mood board, particularly the eclectic mix of textures and combination of new and older loved items. I get a strong feeling of heart and soul in your decorating style!!!

  • Ben t says:

Espen bar stool set. I could lie and say I have a bar they desperately needs stools. But the truth is, my cat’s favourite old one broke. He needs to be stylish.

  • Ange says:

I would love $200 to put towards some statement bar stools that would look amazing against the blackbutt panelling of my kitchen island. Bar stools have become omnipresent – but absent from my kitchen for the last 4 years. They’ll be the last missing jigsaw piece in my kitchen. They will allow family, friends and even strangers to join us around the kitchen. My daughter would like to sit there and do her homework, (or con me into helping her out!), eager to be right in the middle of what’s happening or just keeping me company while I’m busy cooking.

  • Ange says:

The Clovis stools!…or the Espen..no the Adam…ok, the Zoe…aaahhhhh…the KENSAL!!!!
    This is gonna be tough!

  • Louise Moreland says:

How exciting is it planning out a new look for your lounge room. I love that mustard tub chair, what an accent piece. I can just imagine you having a bit of ‘me time’ in that beautiful space. I also love your vintage oak sideboard, what a piece. A sideboard has been a wishlist dream piece of mine ever since we renovated 6 or so years ago. I just have an empty blank white wall screaming for a sideboard and artwork. Funnily enough I have had my eye on Brosa’s Kaneko Sideboard in Natural Oak for some time now. I think I’m secretly hoping Santa will deliver it to me. Thank you for such a refreshing blog and a generous giveaway for your readers. Merry Christmas to you Cintia x

  • Jayne Sherringham says:

Love the Helene tub chair- imagine crafting there with your legs hanging over the arms- happy days,

  • Christine Butler says:

I’d put it towards new mood lighting which my stark lounge room desperately needs. I love the tripod floor lamps by Brosa, so one of those would definitely be on my list.

  • Lesley Olariu says:

Much as I have always hankered for a leather Chesterfield couch à la Camden, I would probably settle for the leather Marken ottoman.. a stylish resting space for my tired tootsies!

  • rebecca delaurence says:

I’d put this towards the Shelley 3 seat sofa! divine!

  • Setting up home alone now. Our rickety, handmade pine coffee / dining table has had it’s day. The Blake Coffee Table in dark concrete grey is both elegant and groovy. Happy I would be to revolve around this handsome piece daily.

  • Laura Mah says:

How exciting having a blank canvas to design your lounge room. It’s like moving into a new house all over again!

I totally love the Stephanie storage ottoman in Ocean Blue, Icannearly feel how lush that velvet feels. We have been blessed to get a puppy into our family BUT she is chewing
E V E R Y T H I N G , so we are looking for creative ways to hide our essentials away for easy access but she can’t chew them! And I think for family Christmas it would be super handy to have an extra seat on standby. Plus you know, luuuuuuuuush velvet !

  • Clare R says:

I have been dreaming about “the perfect armchair” for a number of years now. One that’s luxurious enough for quiet reading time on my own… but also fun enough for a child to join me for story time. I believe I have found “The One” in the Harford Armchair (in that perfect shade of Medium Green). My husband just turned 40 last weekend, and he is notoriously difficult to choose gifts for, but I think this might just fit the bill!

  • Renee Ballantyne says:

Egyptian bedsheets something that I need and will enjoy every night

  • Bee Bowdlert says:

I love what your planning for your room, the lounge you have picked is beautiful. I’d buy the Emily Storage Ottoman from Brosa. Storage is always useful and this ottoman offers storage, style and comfort.

  • rachel sinclair says:

Capra Tripod Floor Lamp – such a stylish piece that would add class to my living room

  • Julie Vulin says:

I’d put the money towards one of the rocking chairs, likely the Betty, which I’d keep in my home office, it’s such a gorgeous chair and I know i’d find it relaxing to sit in and rest my weary brain!

  • Laura Power says:

Love to put it towards the Sondra Sofa bed, we have baby no. 3 arriving next year so our spare guest room will be taken, Be great to have a lovely sofa bed for when my in laws and my parents visit

  • Phoebe Phillips says:

I would put the money towards on of their beautiful ottomans, my daughter is just about to walk and is pulling herself up on everything so to have a soft coffee table so she doesnt keep bumping her head would be heaps better!!

  • Sarah B says:

    Provincial 3 seater sofa
    Elegance, Romance, French
    Tres belle!

  • Ryan H says:

The Majorca Outdoor 2x Dining Chair to put on our deck area so we can sit in comfort whilst watching the kids play in an evening.

  • Gabriella H says:

The Mia Wide Bookcase so I can get some of my piles of books off all the tables and sides and far more neatly displayed in this gorgeous piece of furniture.

  • Charlotte B says:

The Superior Goose Down Duvet so i can finally get a good nights sleep in comfort as opposed to my current nasty duvet.

  • Heidi O'Day says:

I love The Corvus Floor and Table lamps. I’d put my money towards both of these they would be amazing replacements for out one $12 old desk lamp. They are super artsy but subtle at the same time and will blend perfectly into our one room space. I saw some exceptional things I’d love to own but with our budget and being honest, a lot of it is out of our realistic budget. I have now got some great ideas and extra incentive to save.

  • Donald Binks says:

I need some dining chairs – I have the table – but nowhere to sit! At least the $200 would go some way towards buying at least one! Maybe in another ten years I would be able to collect a whole set? 🙂

  • Megan M says:

Top of my list are the McCoy Chest of Drawers,
Such elegant industrial glamour not to be ignored.
Giving my bedroom a touch of class,
    And some stunning contrast –
A flawless combination of mango wood and cement,
Using them each day will make my heart content.
My current drawers need to be replaced,
BROSA McCoy drawers I would lovingly embrace!

I absolutely adore your new family space, it’s so inspiring. I love the colours of the sofa, chair and rug, a beautiful contrast. You have got me thinking about doing a revamp in my lounge!

  • sonya says:

I’d spend it on the Enzo bedside table, because I love the ‘country-cottage’ look it has, and it comes close to matching our other furniture.

  • Tamara says:

First of all, one item was far too hard to pick haha! I would love to buy the Helene Velvet Ottoman. I’ve just moved back to Australia from living overseas and restarting my life has been costly. I have bought the essential pieces for my home. Now I need to add more bright and unique pieces to go in my house to bring more of my personality to it.

  • Kathy Clark says:

Photo Frames as a Picture tells a Thousand Words

  • Amanda says:

Its the simple things in life that bring me pleasure. Coffee in the sunshine, lazy Sunday brunches, or even simply sitting and being surrounded by the peace of my garden. Which is why the Brosa Costa 3 Piece Outdoor Setting is a much needed upgrade that I would invest this voucher in!

  • Melissa Okimoto says:

Thanks for the great post. We need Hampton style bar stools to finish off our kitchen. We would love Espen® Bar Stool Set of 2 (Wire Brushed Beech/French Beige).

  • Kathleen says:

A LEO ARC FLOOR LAMP so in the light, I learn how to love.

  • Veronica D says:

I have a lovely dinner set and beautiful crystal glassware, I just need to update my cutlery and have found the set to finish my table setting the best. Joli 4 Piece an elegant cutlery set, would be divine, purchase enough for setting 6 at the table so we have a perfect matching set all the time.

  • katie gilham says:

I would put it towards the Airlie Outdoor 3 Seater Sofa! I would love to lay on it on a balmy sunny day with a fresh juice, my dog and a good book!

  • Sharon says:

My son and I are moving out of a furnished studio by Christmas and we need literally EVERYTHING ! I would use my voucher towards the junior kids desk because when my sons computer is set up he feels like he is ‘at home’ and he’ll have something to do when he’s not helping me setting up home again.

  • Karley Jenkins says:

Our first baby is on the way & we’re refreshing our loungeroom. The Emily Storage Ottoman is perfect! An extra seat for visitors & discreet storage for baby toys!

  • Kathy Ferguson Clark says:

Throw Rugs are perfect to brighten up a dull lounge room

  • Georgie Mason says:

Oeuf Coffee Table! 6 years ago I made a bad purchase buying an impractical coffee table which is far too big for the size of my living room! This coffee table with its wonderfully functional design and shape is just what my room is crying out for!

  • Lizzylou says:

With Daylight saving here I thought I would love to sit outside on my Patio on a new
Muro Outdoor 2 Seater enough room for me and my books and coffee. Watching the Christmas lights sipping a cold wine.

  • adrienne harries says:

Helene® Velvet Loveseat would be divine
A lovely place to call just mine
    Cosmic Anthracite colour is great
winning will be an excuse to celebrate

  • cheryl ellis says:

Building a new home next year and lots of inspirations here especially would love a rocking chair for my hubby he has mentioned many times his desire to own one

  • Sue B says:

Christmas is coming and so are the visitors, it would be a surprise (and relief) for them NOT to have to sleep on the blow-up lol, so the stylish Siesta 3 Seater Sofa Bed would be my choice. Its clean lines and perfect size (I measured!) for the currently unused (except for a pot plant) corner would be ideal.
I love your lounge room design, but being the boring person I probably am, I’d opt for a more neutral rug so as not to take away from that gorgeous lounge and splashes of bold in the art work. 🙂

  • Careen Perepeczko says:

Victoria Bed Head in French Beige would be the perfect addition to the French Provencial style I’m going for in our bedroom. It’s stylish and well crafted with attention to detail with a simplicity that makes it sophisticated. Thanks for running the competition!

  • sam says:

I’d spend it on the Enzo bedside table, because I love the ‘country-cottage’ look it has,

  • Milly says:

Lounge room design is spot on!

I have recently moved to Australia from overseas and currently my room has a bed and a built-in-robe covered in mirrors and a green plant pot homing a succulent. Having been here for a week, I’ve actually grown to the unintentional simplicity of the room and I think I’ll be keeping it this way. I would use the $200 to buy the Hydra Floor Lamp. I love the smooth pop of colour and would add warmth and character to my room!

  • Kate Slack says:

I would put it towards The Field Print it is so bright and colourful and is just what i have been looking for to add to my new home that we are hopefully moving into after Christmas!

  • catherine says:

    My bedroom is so drab,
    I can see Brosa
    making it fab!
    Instead of dark and dingy
    Id liven it
    Brosa Essentials Cotton Rich
    Quilt Cover Set White
Adding a glam thats outta sight!
    A touch of more style
    with the Indus Lamp
    Gorgeous, my approval
    stamp 😀

  • Alex says:

When we moved into our house, the master bedroom was the first room we reno’d. Eight years later, we’re still sleeping on a hand-me-down, flat-pack bed my dad made for guests. So I’d be putting the voucher towards the Bruin wooden bed frame, so that we can actually say we’ve finished ONE room in our house!

  • Jen Stocks says:

The Bruce Entertainment Unit would be the perfect accompaniment to our family/lounge! It would match so beautifully with the weathered brown leather couches, natural fibres and textures already in there, as well as our wall of art prints and photographs. My decorating style is a modern farmhouse / modern Australiana look, which is an obvious choice given we are on a farm. I’m currently using an old wardrobe tipped sideways as a tv cabinet because I have been waiting to find the perfect piece. The Bruce is just that!

  • SCOTT BRUNSKILL says:

I really am in need of new pillows and for once I’d love a couple of classy ones….so in saying that the card would be great as with it I would buy 2 of the Ultra Lux Duck Down Pillows…..comfortable sleeps become more and more important these days as the old body …… fingers crossed

  • Jocy says:

A box of books with a hand towel on top,
Is where all our snacks and drinks we pop,
A coffee table would look so good,
Particularly if it was made of wood,
The Mia Coffee Table with shelf below,
On top, somewhere for the drinks to go,
And storage space – would be so useful I know.

  • Jaimi Layt says:

I’d purchase the Cloud Grey Nottage Airchair! My closest friend is ill and on bed rest in hospital with her first bundle of joy. While she awaits her arrival I am secretly putting together the nursery of her dreams; for the greatest surprise when she arrives back home.

  • Rachel K says:

Your lounge room refresh looks very hip!

I’d love to be the proud owner of the Alicante 6 Piece Outdoor Setting 4x Armchair and Lounge and Coffee Table because it fits with my rustic entertaining lifestyle where people enjoy each other’s company and hearty food! Food’s the central theme of everything I love and being able to bring people together through cooking and sharing the table while enjoying the Australian Summer is what makes me happy!

  • Bethany Allen says:

The past year has been a stressful affair
I’ve done what I can to let down my hair
I created a little oasis in the yard
Where I retreat when things get too hard
It’s nothing special, though I’d like it to be
So I’d use this voucher as a gift to me
I’d put it towards the Tenerife Outdoor Lounge
So I can have my space, without having to scrounge

  • Definitely a new coffee table! I love the ‘Brosa black coffee table’, It would look amazing with our new sofa!

  • Fi says:

Oh I would put the $200 towards the Elle King Size Bed Head! My bedroom is so drab and need some love this would definitely help!

  • It’s been 3 years but we still haven’t found suitable bedside tables for our room, and we’re making do with some by dad found free at the tip! Wait no more, the maison bedside table makes my heart leap! With its beautiful sculptured legs and elegant design, it’ll fit in beautifully with our Art Deco vanity table!

  • Teena Lewis says:

Loving the storage ottomans, our house isn’t very big and my main grips is not enough storage, one of these would be awesome in any room in our place 🙂

  • Glen Toyer says:

I’m currently building a house and my beautiful new bedroom needs a comfortable and stylish
chair so I can sit and do up my shoe laces ! Your Einin Accent Chair will do just nicely.

  • Loz Jordan says:

I’m going to put it towards the Betty Rocking Chair in Heron Grey or Cloud Grey. What a stunning piece! Currently in my nursery I’ve got a pink velour recliner that I picked up for $10 at a garage sale, which has served its purpose but mama would really love such a gorgeous rocker for those early morning feeds! I bet it feels as good as it looks.

  • Katy Anderson says:

I would like the voucher because I would give it to my mum. She works hard as a single mum and has done an awesome job raising my brother and I. Unfortunately, due to money issues we have to move to a smaller house. I would love to surprise her with some new furniture for the new house 🙂 I also love the colour scheme of your mood board!

  • Dianne says:

Since moving house the living room is still a storage area. Like you are creating, I would love a bright, welcoming environment to relax in, but not sure how to accomplish it yet. Some of the lessons you’ve learnt about light make me realise the Brosa Clem sofa bed colour I’ve been wanting won’t work with the dimness of our room. So I’d choose to put it toward the Haim Clothes Rack – finally somewhere to hang bags and coats and a bright, cheerful colour to lift the hallway. You also inspire me to be patient and take my time in working out how to create our living space, thank you for that.

  • Michelle Ward says:

I’m in need of a statement piece for my lounge room that has a primary function but also a story to tell. I think the Rupert Coffee Table will be very supportive of my coffee/tea drinking and I’d love to learn of her humble elm beginnings.

  • Shontelle Hamon says:

    That sofa is BEAUTIFUL!

As an aside – we’ve been saving for a luxurious bed for grandma (My MIL) who we have been BLESSED to often have staying with us to help me with my 2 newborn bubs. This prize would stretch us to our goal and allow us to jazz up ‘grandmas room’ as our 3 year old calls our guest room.

  • Shontelle Hamon says:

I got so caught up in looking at the website I forgot what it would go towards – the ‘Anica Gas Lift King Size Bed Frame’

  • Sandie Cornish says:

So many awesome things – but think I would put it towards the Mila Armchair in stone grey – Loving the length of the seat – looks super comfy! Your new lounge room design inspiration board looks pretty amazing too! x

  • Jessica Ashbrooke says:

Some outdoor chairs we have nothing outside to sit on

  • natalie says:

    Mimmi 3 Seater Sofa

  • Christine knott says:

I’m in Brosa-love with your Ottomans! and the Sara Storage Ottoman in particular. I love the padded top, the strong wood frame, the perfect look that will complete my bedroom and the way practicality marries plush and pretty.

  • Julie P says:

id buy bedframe, change the bedroom up

  • Alexandra Thomas says:

I have been tempted to the Brosa website many times while searching Gumtree for the perfect nursery armchair. The Otto looks so comfortable and I love the rich scarlet and indigo colour options.

  • terry says:

This range is so cool, and looks so comfy. I wish I had a big house to put it in

  • Jennifer B. says:

Old pine bedroom hand-me-downs shouldn’t be forever pieces…
With their clean, elegant lines, I’d choose two CATO BEDSIDE TABLES to finish our bedroom and finally look all grown-up!

    After forty years…

  • Craig White says:

It’s been a hard life for my entertainment unit. What was once a large freestanding Box TV unit, has been cut down to a reasonably nice, but quite old and heavy TV unit. Is a major pain to move for parties.
Time’s have changed, and so has style. Would love to upgrade to something like the Bruce Entertainment Unit with Drawers. Modern, functional, and sexy as all hell.
