With that in mind, I think pretty metal tins make the perfect starting point for creating unique and thoughtful Christmas gifts that will be appreciated for years to come, with the added bonus of being affordable too.

Another bonus about giving gifts in tins is that you don’t need to worry about gift wrapping, just add a pretty bow and you are all set.

I kept an eye out for interesting tins while I was thrifting recently, and picked up an assortment of new and vintage tins that inspired some really fun Christmas gift ideas.

Of course you could fill your tins with food gifts and delicious edible treats like some shortbread or my yummy Christmas Tree Cookies, but if you are looking for something extra special, I’ve put together five unique gift ideas in vintage tins that I think you’ll love.

All the gifts are made up of items that can be affordably found at op-shops (thrift stores), your local supermarket or even your own home.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create gorgeous gift packs or edible Christmas gifts, just choose the right collection of inexpensive or pre-loved bits and pieces, and the recipient will appreciate your gifts for many years.

Vintage tins and craft supplies were just made for each other. A crafter can never have too many tins, they are perfect for storing ongoing projects, keeping bits and buttons organised and countless other uses.

I’ve put together two craft kit suggestions but you can tailor the contents to suit your recipient’s interests. If you want to make your Christmas gift extra special, throw a few craft lesson vouchers in there too.

Crochet Craft Kit in a Tin

I love this floral tin so much. I picked it up for 50c at a little country Op-shop in Tasmania. I can imagine it’s been used to store all sorts of crafty bits for decades.

I thought a crochet kit would be perfect and I raided my stash for some pretty yarn in colours to match the tin.

Vintage Tin Sewing Kit

Small tins with hinged lids make ideal sewing boxes. I’ve used this little chocolate tin and filled it with my favourite vintage haby finds, and some practical sewing bits. Make a little felt pin cushion and attach it to the lid to keep pins and needles tidy.

Portable Lego Playset in a Travel Tin

Although the kids may be slightly disappointed to discover the toffee tin does not actually contain any sweets, they’ll get over it pretty quickly when they realise it is full of Lego.

A square tin would be ideal, but in a pinch, a round one works just fine as long as the lid is large enough for a base plate to fit comfortably.

If your kids have tons of Lego, don’t buy any new play-sets, you can re-imagine what they already have to create this portable Lego set.

How to make a portable lego playset

How to make a Portable Lego Playset:

  • Use double sided tape to attach base plate to lid of tin
  • Cut a piece of felt to fit the bottom of tin and glue in place
  • Fill with assorted Lego

The felt on the base of the tin helps stop the blocks from rattling around too much.

I hope I’ve given you some great ideas that inspire you to put together your own Vintage Tin Christmas gift Ideas. I’d love to hear your suggestions for gifts that would work well in vintage metal tins.

Look for old tins at:

  • Thrift stores
  • Garage Sale
  • Flea markets
  • In your cupboards
  • On Etsy

Sometimes the really old ones may be priced a bit expensively (because someone has considered them to be ‘collectable’), but on average I paid $1-$2 for each of these, with the most expensive being the peanut tin at $4.
