Pom-Pom Flamingo Christmas Ornament

Flamingo Christmas Ornament DIY - Mypoppet.com.au

Forget the snowflakes and reindeer. This Christmas decorate your tree with a tropical vibe and embrace the warmer weather.

I’ll show you how to make a flamingo with a fluffy pom pom body that looks like real feathers.

You can make this bird any colour you like. Why be limited to pink? Turquoise, lime or purple would look great? You could even glue on a sprinkling of glitter for some extra sparkle.

Make a pom-pom flamingo

You will need:

  • Orange yarn
  • Pink net: cut into long strips (5 mm wide)
  • Felt: pink, orange
  • Scissors: fabric and paper
  • Cardboard
  • Armature wire: 1X 48cm (head-neck), 1x 44cm (legs)
  • Needle
  • Thread: pink, orange, black
  • Pliers
  • Fabric marker (air erasable)
  • Glue and glitter (optional)

Note:

  • You can make the ornaments smaller by reducing the print size of the template.
  • Instead of hanging this little flamingo on a tree, why not display it as a soft sculpture? To help it stand you can cut a rectangular piece of foam board and pin the flamingo’s feet into the board.

How to:

1/ Print template at 100% and cut out the pattern pieces.

2/ To make a pom-pom trace the ring pattern twice onto cardboard. Cut out both cardboard rings. Layer the two cardboard rings together. Wrap the orange yarn around the cardboard rings, occasionally switching to the pink net. Do this until it is nice and thick.

3/ Fit your fingers into the middle of the cardboard rings. Now cut the yarn along the outside edge of the cardboard rings.

4/ Feed a medium length of yarn between the cardboard rings. Before pulling this yarn tight, fold in half two lengths of wire and slip into the middle opening of the ring. Tighten the yarn, closing in toward the centre of the pom-pom. Now tie a knot.

5/ Pop the cardboard rings off the pom-pom. Twist each pair of wires close to the pom-pom base.

6/ Trace the flamingo head-neck pattern piece twice onto pink felt and cut out. With black thread hand sew an eye outline to each side of the head.

7/ Curve the head-neck wire to the shape of the head-neck pattern piece. Sandwich the wire between the two felt pieces, and blanket stitch along the outside edge with contrasting orange thread.

10/ Attach a hanging loop by sewing on a piece of scrap yarn to the top of the head or threading it through the centre of the pom pom body.
