She loved when I surprise her with little gifts, what kids doesn&#8217;t? Although I&#8217;m sure she&#8217;d prefer a My Little Pony if she knew they existed. Today I&#8217;ll show you how I made this kiwi fruit, and also how to use carding brushes to blend roving colours.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t familiar with the technique of needle felting check out this post &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/2011\/01\/needle-felting-basics.html\" target=\"_blank\">Needle Felting Basics<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>You will need:<\/h4>\n<p>Wool Roving &#8211; green, brown, white &amp; black (also called wool fiber)<br \/>\nFelting needles<br \/>\nFoam Pad<br \/>\nCarding Brushes (optional)<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i1013.photobucket.com\/albums\/af252\/mypoppetshop\/tutorial%20no2\/kiwi1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"needle felting how to\" src=\"https:\/\/i1013.photobucket.com\/albums\/af252\/mypoppetshop\/tutorial%20no2\/kiwi1.jpg\" alt=\"how to needle felt\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h4>How to:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>To make the basic shape, take a small ball of green roving and start needling to form a half egg shape. Add layers of roving and keep needling until you are happy with your shape.<\/li>\n<li>To make the skin, take a layer of brown roving and needle it in around the outside of the kiwi shape. Add several thin layers to make an even coating.<\/li>\n<li>For the seeds lay just a few fibers in a star shape on the top and needle this in.<\/li>\n<li>Finally add a small amount of white to the center to finish off the top of your kiwi fruit.<\/li>\n<li>Go over the whole surface till the wool is firmly felted and you can not peel it off.<\/li>\n<li>Periodically roll between warmed hands to keep the shape even and remove needle marks.<\/li>\n<li>Finally to tidy up any stray fibers, give the kiwi a &#8216;surface needle&#8217; (rub the needle across the surface).<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re done!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i1013.photobucket.com\/albums\/af252\/mypoppetshop\/tutorial%20no2\/kiwi2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"needle felt kiwi\" src=\"https:\/\/i1013.photobucket.com\/albums\/af252\/mypoppetshop\/tutorial%20no2\/kiwi2.jpg\" alt=\"make a felt fruit\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h3>How to blend wool with a Carding Brush:<\/h3>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t quite have the right shade of brown for the skin of the kiwi so I blended it myself using a set of carding brushes.<br \/>\nCarding brushes can be a little difficult and expensive to get hold of, but a couple of cat\/dog brushes have been known to do the job quite well. (sometimes called slickers)<br \/>\nCarding brushes have fine angled wires that pull the fibers apart and align them.
