I love crochet, it’s a technique that comes in super handy in my arsenal of ‘crafty skills’. Once you know a few basic stitches you can make practically anything with crochet. Need a shopping bag<\/a>, crochet it! Storage basket<\/a>, get the hooks out!<\/p>\n

It seems I’m not the only fan, you guys love it too! I can tell because crochet craft projects always feature in my most viewed posts.<\/p>\n

I was lucky enough to pick up my crochet skills by watching my mother, at the age of around nine or ten, she taught me some basic stitches which helped me along on my crochet journey.<\/p>\n

Having some basic grounding in crochet has helped me a lot when it comes to learning new stitches and techniques, but what if you don’t have a friend or family member that can teach you the basics? The internet saves the day!<\/p>\n

I’m far from a crochet expert, so when it comes to clarifying something I’m confused about, or want to flex my crafting muscles and extend my abilities, I have a few online resources that I find very useful.<\/p>\n

Learn to Crochet – Best Online Classes & Resources<\/h2>\n

1. Crafty Minx Crochet School<\/h3>\n

Dana from CraftyMinx.com has put together a fantastic work at your own pace crochet course to suit beginners. The course consists of 23 lessons, many of which feature high quality video content to explain concepts and techniques. I love how she has presented her graphics very appealingly, and even though she is based in the US, she also uses UK terminology and has videos for right and left handers. You can even download a diploma at the end!<\/p>\n

2. Youtube<\/h3>\n

If I’m looking for a clarification on a particular stitch or want to learn a new crochet technique, Youtube is my ‘go to’ place for video instruction. Unfortunately one of the down sides is that not all content is up to scratch, it can take a bit of clicking around to find the good stuff. Also there are lots of different crochet styles, so you may find some videos confusing if the demonstrators style varies significantly to yours.<\/p>\n

If you are a beginner, I suggest sticking mainly to one channel to get consistent tuition. I really like how The Crochet Crowd channel presents their classes – from basic skills to more advanced patterns, there are over 100 videos on just crochet alone, plus some knitting tutorials too. They also have a dedicated left handed crochet channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. Craftsy<\/h3>\n

Craftsy has a huge range of online crochet courses which would be suited to those that want to take their skills to the next level. The courses range in price and you can often get them on sale which makes the enrollment more affordable. I like that you have lifetime access to the classes and the instructor gives you support when you have any questions.<\/p>\n

4. Skillshare<\/h3>\n

I’ve yet to try Skillshare, but it looks like a really interesting concept. Skillshare is an online learning platform that differs to craftsy in that it’s subscription based. For a monthly fee of around $8-$12 you have access to thousands of online classes in all sorts of creative and tech genres, including crochet. It looks like most of the crochet classes are project based, but often focusing on a project is a great way to learn several skills in one go. They are currently offering a one month free trial if you want to check it out.<\/p>\n

5. Vogue Knitting<\/h3>\n

If you don’t enjoy watching videos, of just want to quickly refer to diagrams and written instructions, the Vogue Knitting website has a whole ‘learn to crochet’ section which has a great list of basics stitch instructions that you should bookmark. Although learning to crochet by watching a video is great, when you get your head around the basics, often just a few diagrams is all you need to understand a new stitch. I like referring to this website if I need to jog my memory on something that I haven’t done in a while without having to sit through a whole video.<\/p>\n
