It’s been a while since I picked up the embroidery hoop and took some time out to quietly stitch. So when Tuttle Publishing<\/a> offered me some of their new craft releases to review, I was keen to have a look at 501 Enchanting Embroidery Designs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This book is an English language translation of a Japanese craft book with a collection of embroidery designs, patterns and projects by various Japanese designers. I was delighted to discover a friend of mine and crafty fashion blogger at Style Wilderness<\/a>, LeeYong Soo, was the translator, what a small world!<\/p>\n

I’m a big fan of Japanese craft books, and every time I’ve visited Japan, I’ve returned home with a maxed out luggage allowance and a suitcase full of books. I’ve always enjoyed the the way Japanese craft books are so simply and clearly presented with lots of illustrations that are easy enough to follow even if you don’t read Japanese.<\/p>\n

Full of zakka style embroidery designs which are heavily influenced by Scandinavian, Mid Century Modern and Eastern European folk motifs, as well as a few simple sewing projects that give examples of how theses sweet stitched illustrations can be used decoratively.<\/p>\n

The pattern illustrations are all in the back section of the book with colour number references if you fancy copying the designs exactly.<\/p>\n

Basic pattern transfer and stitching instructions are provided, but they are not exhaustive. Some basic embroidery skills would be helpful to best utilise this book. Project sewing instructions are clear, but some sewing experience would also be beneficial. I’d recommend to a skill level of confident beginner and above.<\/p>\n

I always like to try out at least one project when I review a craft book, so I chose to make a Butterfly Shaped Potholder<\/strong>. It’s the perfect project to use up small fabric remnants.<\/p>\n

I chose a cute vintage cup design and stitched it onto some chambray scraps.<\/p>\n

It turned out pretty cute!<\/p>\n

I’d recommend this book as a craft design reference to keep on your bookshelf. The designs are ideal for embellishing lots of small craft projects and can be endlessly adapted to create your own unique creations.<\/p>\n
