Emma was away on holidays last week so the first thing I did was dive head first into my scrap pile and start an <strong>experimental quilt<\/strong>. I&#8217;m fairly lazy when it comes to planning or measuring so this project was quite <em>laissez-faire<\/em>, with the possibility in the back of my mind that it could be a total fail. (I run that risk with most of my sewing!)<\/p>\n<p>But surprise, surprise, not a fail at all. Far from your perfect cookie cutter quilt pattern, this haphazard design somehow works in all it&#8217;s imperfectness. It shall hence be named <strong>The Haphazard Quilt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve included general directions showing you how to make your own, but in the spirit of haphazardness, they are not prescriptive, but rather a guide to give you an idea of the process involved. Depending on the size and amount of the fabric scraps you have on hand, you can adjust the &#8216;pattern&#8217; to suit your needs.<br \/>\nTime to do some scrapbusting..<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6131 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/measurements.jpg\" alt=\"quilt making you will need \" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/measurements.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/measurements-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>You will need:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A big pile of fabric scraps (cotton) sorted into&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8211; Neutrals &#8211; cut 15cm square<br \/>\n&#8211; colours &#8211; strips of varying from 5-8cm wide matched into complementary tones<\/li>\n<li>Backing fabric and batting the size of your quilt top<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Scissors or rotary cutter<\/li>\n<li>pen or vanishing marker<\/li>\n<li>Sewing Machine<\/li>\n<li>General sewing supplies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to make the quilt blocks:<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6136 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/square-assembly.jpg\" alt=\"quilt block assembly \" width=\"600\" height=\"896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/square-assembly.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/square-assembly-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Line up edge of square to coloured strip, right sides facing, sew 1\/4&#8243; seam.<br \/>\n&#8211; Press with neutral fabric flat, so colour doesn&#8217;t show through on lighter fabric.<br \/>\n&#8211; Attach pieces in order shown on pictures. You can sew and then trim any overlapping length of strip.<br \/>\n&#8211; Repeat. I&#8217;ve made 35 blocks for my quilt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6135 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cut-squares.jpg\" alt=\"cut squares for quilt block\" width=\"600\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cut-squares.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cut-squares-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Lay several blocks on top of each other, lining them up roughly (doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect).<br \/>\n&#8211; Cut them into quarters.<br \/>\n&#8211; Turn the block pieces so the neutral faces out and the coloured edges are touching to form a cross.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6134 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/sewing-steps-.jpg\" alt=\"sewing block steps \" width=\"600\" height=\"909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/sewing-steps-.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/sewing-steps--198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>a) Assemble the block by laying (right sides facing) two of the block quarters together, sew along marked line.<br \/>\nb) Trim away excess fabric.<br \/>\nc) Open and press.<br \/>\nd) Repeat with bottom block quarters and then join the two halves together.<br \/>\ne) Open and press. The edges may be a little uneven if you have used different strip widths, don&#8217;t worry, that will be trimmed later.<br \/>\n&#8211; Repeat with all your blocks, they may vary in size<\/p>\n<h2>How to assemble quilt:<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6133 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/joining-pieces.jpg\" alt=\"quilt block layout\" width=\"600\" height=\"895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/joining-pieces.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mypoppet.com.au\/makes\/mp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/joining-pieces-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Lay out your blocks, taking note of any irregular shaped blocks. Try to match similar sized blocks together.<br \/>\n&#8211; Join blocks together into strips, keeping seams as square as possible so your strip is fairly straight. A ruler helps here to keep seams as straight as possible. Mark with a pen if required and pin. It&#8217;s truly unique, and of the moment, I love how scrap quilts capture a moment in time. Lots of reminders of projects past in there.<\/p>\n<p>So now it&#8217;s your turn to dig around in your scraps.
