Wise words from the authors of the new craft book for kids (and parents), Sewing Simple Softies with 17 Amazing Designers<\/a> by Trixi Symonds of Sew A Softie<\/a> and Deborah Fisher from Fish Museum + Circus.<\/a><\/p>\n

A craft book full of ideas to inspire kids to get sewing.<\/p>\n

You may already know Trixi from her Sew a Softie Blog hops<\/a> which I’ve participated in for the past several years, as well as her emerging worldwide crafting movement for children – Global Kids Sewing Party<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trixie is passionate about teaching kids not only the practicalities of how to sew, but also its power to nurture creativity and community.<\/p>\n

In this book, 17 designers have collaborated to create simple soft toy projects that will inspire kids to get creative.<\/p>\n

From a giant tomato made from a recycled sweater, to a cute teddy bear, this craft book has a project for all skill levels of new sewists.<\/p>\n

All the softies featured can be made by hand, with no sewing machine or fancy equipment required.<\/p>\n

Included is a section that gives advice on the best tools and materials to use, as well as a basic guide to stitches and techniques. Handy for adults that are new to sewing, so parents and kids can learn together.<\/p>\n

The language level used in the book is clear, but I’d probably recommend it for tweens\/teens and up. Younger children will need some adult guidance, so this is a nice book to use collaboratively, where the child can choose a project and an adult or older sibling can guide the project.<\/p>\n

Emma had a flip through the book and decided she wanted to make this cute little toucan with funny yarn legs.<\/p>\n

Even though she isn’t the most patient of crafters (and delegated many of the ‘boring’ tasks like tracing the pattern and cutting the parts), she did take some time to stitch the body and her favourite part, stuffing!<\/p>\n

We decided on blue legs because, fun fact, some toucans actually have blue legs – google it!<\/p>\n

And after some help from me, threading needles and tying knots, Mr Toucan was finished.<\/p>\n
