Have you ever been to a clothes swap? I haven’t. Normally I just donate my unwanted clothing to the local op-shop (it’s where I buy most of my clothes anyways, so it’s sort of like a swap I suppose).
But I have a few hard to get rid of items, like a pair of Italian black leather boots and a vintage wool coat, that I’m holding onto for some silly reason. They don’t fit, or suit me anymore, but because I paid a lot for them, I feel like they still hold value.
One of my local councils, the City of Stonnington, is holding a big clothes swap as part of the National Sustainable Living Festival and I’m excited to go and check it out.
I think a clothes swap is the solution to letting go. There’s something about the idea of swapping something, as opposed to just dumping it in a clothing bin, that feels more satisfying. I’ll be clearing the clutter out of my closet and hopefully finding something I’ll actually use in return. Also some lucky size 40 with thinner calves than me is going to be rocking a stunning pair of boots this Winter. Win Win!
About the City of Stonnington’s Great Summer Clothes Swap
It’s simple to get involved. Bring along your quality but neglected clothes, shoes and accessories and exchange them for swap tokens which can be used to ‘purchase’ new items. To qualify for swap tokens, items must be gently used or as-new. No faulty or stained clothing – give quality, get quality!
Five items maximum
Join the hands-on make-and-mend sessions where you can mend your broken jewellery and make new pieces out of recycled materials, and turn old t-shirts into shopping bags. Interactive workshops run all day.
There will also be speakers and workshops where you can learn how to curate your perfect wardrobe and hone your style, how to de-clutter your wardrobe, and how to responsibly dispose of your unwanted stuff. Talks run from 1pm to 2.45pm.
Schedule:
1.00pm – 2.30pm – drop off your items to swap in exchange for Swap Tokens
3.00pm – start swapping
4.00pm – swapping ends

What a good idea. I tend to hang onto a lot of stuff that doesn’t fit me too. Particularly shoes that I once paid a lot of money for but don’t fit or are way too high for me to walk in. Lol 😝
