Brought to you by Cats the Musical
In 1981, well before the internet LOL cat phenomenon, the world got it’s cute cat fix from a little stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber called Cats, you may have heard of it?
It’s hard to believe from my youthful appearance that I was around in the 80’s when Cats first premiered in Australia (yes I’m that old), I never had a chance to see it back then but I did have a ‘Cats’ t-shirt and thought it was the coolest thing ever!
Fast forward 30-ish years and Cats is back! Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes to Australia for a strictly limited season, starring DELTA GOODREM as Grizabella.
I was invited to the Melbourne premiere to finally see what all the fuss is about – after all this is one of the most popular musicals of all time. Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.
Of course I was most familiar with the show’s most famous song ‘Memory’, which Delta does an amazing job with, but I was unaware that Andrew Lloyd Webber based the story on a book of poems by T. S. Eliot – Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Rather than a traditional narrative, the show loosely ties in the stories of each Jellicle Cat as they come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball.
Even though the production has been slightly updated for the revival, the iconic look of the costumes have kept their original vibe. Every cat has individual make-up, which also helps to project their personality. Witness the transformation from human to cat in these stunning new make-up time-lapse video.
Also, did I mention dancing? The dancing was pretty awesome, in fact I would have been quite content to see ‘Cats – The Ballet’. Someone should get onto that.
So if you are a total cat person that’s into 80’s nostalgia, loves singing and dancing, and totally appreciates some leg warmer action, this is the show for you.
Playing at the gorgeous Regent Theater in Melbourne till the 24 Jan 2016 then touring to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
