I’ve been walking past 39 Station Street for many years, I’d stroll past with Emma in her pusher and wonder about the history of this amazingly preserved shop front. It was empty for a while and then Melbourne Vintage Audio moved in, I like to think that the building found the prefect tenants, rather than the tenants finding the building. It’s pleasing to know a business that celebrates the beauty of old things has taken up residence there.
Owners Zane and Manuel hunt far and wide for vintage cases of all shapes and sizes to re-purpose into portable speakers. Travel cases, school bags, bowls cases, sewing machine cases, projector cases, if it has a history they want it.
Each case is individually handmade in the store and equipped with state of the art amplifiers, rechargeable battery systems, Bluetooth and Wifi so you can play your favourite tunes from your smartphone, tablet, computer or even turntable. But being lovers of vintage the guys love to recycle and use reclaimed cabling, nuts and bolts, packing materials and even speakers where possible.
If you are after something special or have your own case with sentimental history that your want to convert, they welcome custom orders. You can also take a pick from the many, many cases they have in their collection and custom tailor the ultimate sound system to suit your needs.
Did I mention how gorgeous the store front is, I’m particularly in love with the stained glass ceiling and the copper window frames. Manuel tells me that when they took over the lease things were looking a bit shabby and they spent a lot of time cleaning and polishing to bring the copper back to it’s former glory. The next big job will be installing a period fireplace and cleaning the stained glass, but the logistics of that are a little more tricky.
Next time you’re near Malvern take a detour down Station street to admire this beautiful store. If you are in the market for some new-old speakers or looking for a very special gift for a vintage loving audiophile, Melbourne Vintage Audio is a must visit.
