When it comes to rooftop experiences, Melbourne has got it covered, you’ll find trendy types hanging out at rooftop bars, restaurants and cinemas around town. And now the rooftop scene is complete with the opening of a brand new accommodation concept – St Jerome’s The Hotel. From May 20, you can sleep under the stars in luxury camp style digs with a bird’s eye view of Melbourne. ‘Glamping’ in the heart of the city!
I was invited to the Melbourne Central rooftop today for the preview and got a sneak peek of what the hotel will look like when it opens. The concierge desk and one of the wings are still under construction, but what I did get to see was pretty cool. The whole rooftop has been covered in synthetic turf and luxury bell tents have been pitched on the site.
We are looking for someone with a spirit of adventure, and wanting the unique experience of staying in a tent on a rooftop in the middle of a city.
But there is no waking up on a lumpy deflated air mattress, the tents have been fitted out with stylish decor, comfortable beds, luxury linen, fluffy quilts and electric blankets and heaters to keep you super warm.
But what’s the bathroom situation like? Good question! Each tent gets it’s own self contained en suite stocked with Swisse Body Care products. It certainly beats queuing up at the caravan park shower block. (I think these mobile bathrooms are a brilliant idea, I’ll have to consider hiring one when we do our bathroom renovations soon.)
With rates starting at $330 per night you can expect service on par with other luxury hotels and no skimping on the fluffy bathrobes.
The price includes gourmet breakfast hampers delivered to your tent, morning tai chi and meditation classes, Mini bar with complimentary soft drinks, water and snacks, afternoon tea with treats from Cupcake Central and free games at Strike Bowling in Melbourne Central. There are also discounted offers and services being offered by Melbourne Central retailers exclusively for hotel guests.
Partnering with Melbourne-based not-for-profit YGAP – ‘Pushies for Purpose’, bikes will be available for hire with proceeds going directly to help fund work to empower communities disadvantaged by poverty to become self-sustainable.
Jerome Borazio the Melbourne entrepreneur behind the annual St Jerome’s Laneway festival has been working on this venture for quite a while and had actually planned to have it open late last year, but doesn’t feel the colder weather will be a problem “We are looking for someone with a spirit of adventure, and wanting the unique experience of staying in a tent on a rooftop in the middle of a city.”
If Melbourne weather is anything to go by, only urban adventurers prepared for all eventualities need apply. Glamping in the heart of the city, that’s certainly my style of ‘roughing it’.
Would you trade a luxury hotel room for a tent?

I love camping, but glamping in the city – yes please, what fun. I can imagine this as a sneaky romantic getaway from the kids actually.
Wow! This is a great concept. I’d love to try it out for a night. Camping is not at all my thing…but GLAMPING, on the other hand…
