Top 5 History week events - fashion & craft

Take a break from the present day – head out and explore Victoria’s fascinating past during History Week. Here is your chance to step back in time!

An array of exciting activities will bring Victoria’s colourful past to life during History Week, which runs from October 16-23. Events that celebrate our heritage are being held across the state and there is something to appeal to everyone.

I’ve picked out five events that really sounded interesting and catered to my interests of vintage style, textiles and craft. Even if my picks aren’t quite your thing, there is so much on offer that you are sure to find something that peaks your interest too.

My Poppet’s Top 5 History Week Picks

  1. From Mos to Mullets – A new photographic exhibition about the history of hair is showing at the Victorian Archives Centre in North Melbourne. Who knew that hairstyles were so important. As well as being a marker of identity, gender and culture, hair also functions as a kind of visual time stamp. Wondering when a photo was taken? Well, take a look at the hair! Now showing until February 2017, Mon-Fri 10am to 4.30pm, Victorian Archives Centre, 99 Shiel Street, North Melbourne. No bookings required, free entry.
  2. Semco – the Wonderful World of Art Needlework – Fans of Needlework, embroidery and craft will find this exhibition interesting. Semco was likely the biggest embroidery company in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, Sandringham and District Historical Society invites you to visit an exhibition of factory and staff photographs, needlework, pattern books and embroidery threads that were produced at their factories in Sandringham. 19th-21st & 23rd Oct 2-5pm, 6 Waltham St, Sandringham. Free entry.
  3. Fashion and style in Dandenong in the 1950s and 1960s -A fascinating display exploring changes in clothing, accessories and dressmaking during an important time in Dandenong’s development. In the 1950s and 1960s – as Dandenong changed from a market town to an industrial centre – shops, emporiums, and dressmakers brought fashion trends here from around the world. 17th-21st Oct 10am-4pm, 66 McCrae St, Dandenong. Free entry.
  4. Meet the Makers Open Day – For one day only, makers from all over Yarra Ranges will come together to show how they use thread and textiles to create art, clothing and lasting wearable items. Emporium recalls a time when clothes were made to last and retail culture was just getting started. Drop in for demonstrations or get hands-on with fabric, weaving or other textile arts. Saturday 22nd Oct 10am-4pm, Yarra Ranges Regional Museum 35-37 Castella St, Lilydale. Free entry.
  5. Mucklefest 2016 – A fun day out for the whole family. Celebrate History Week in Muckleford and enjoy trains, a tractor pull, engines, cars, clydesdales, craft, blacksmithing, a jumping castle, displays, a market, music and much more. 23rd Oct, Muckleford Railway Station, Muckleford-Walmer Rd, Muckleford. Gates open at 10am, Adults $5, Children Free.

I’m really going to make an effort to get to the Meet The Makers Open Day, the accompanying exhibition Emporium, looks super interesting.
