How to Crochet: Chunky Hexie Crochet Rug Pattern

Hexagons are my favourite shape to crochet, more interesting than a boring old square and easier than a circle, with the bonus that they all fit together in a pleasing honeycomb pattern.

I thought it would be fun to use some of my t-shirt yarn stash to make a Chunky Hexie Crochet Rug – ideal to use as a bedside mat or in the bathroom. If it gets grubby I can just throw it in the washing machine, so practical.

If you are new to crochet or just need a little guidance, I’ve created a detailed instructional video running you through the whole pattern. I hope you find it useful, it took about 22 hours to upload to youtube, my internet is super slow!

I also posted a video yesterday showing in a bit more details how to crochet a Treble stitch and make a Magic Loop, two of the main things you need to know to crochet this project. Watch it here – How to crochet: Magic Loop & Treble Stitch (UK).

Hexagon Crochet Rug Assembly Instructions:

Once you have crocheted 10 hexagons, arrange them in 3 rows of 3, 4  and 3. Note that because some t-shirt yarn is chunkier than others which leads to slight side variation. Once you sew them together it will be fine.

I love how this little crochet rug brightened up this dark corner of my kitchen, but Emma thought it was so awesome that it now lives in her bedroom. Also how gorgeous is my orchid, I’ve had it for ages and after being dormant for a while it shot up 2 beautiful sprays of flowers that compliment the rug beautifully.
