My Upcycled Braided T-Shirt Rug tutorial is consistently one of the most viewed posts on the blog, but I often get comments or emails asking me to clarify the method for cutting the t-shirt into strips.
I’ve made a short video that shows you how I do mine which should clarify the process. There are lots of different methods to do this that will still give you usable strips, but I think this is the easiest way and uses as much of the t-shirt as possible. This is how I do mine.
You can also use this same technique to make t-shirt yarn for knitting and crochet, just look for t-shirts without side seams and cut the strips about 1″ wide.
Give this a go with plastic bags to make ‘plarn’.
Tell me how you get on.

That is BRILLIANT!!! I’ve been planning to start cutting up my shirts and using them for this kind of thing. I had no idea that was the way to do it. I can’t thank you enough for sharing. enjoy your trip to the UK too. :0)
Perfect! Very straightforward! I kept looking at directions and being totally confused. Like the way you use the neck too!
I try to be as thrifty as possible.
this is beautiful!! Could you explain how you switch colors in more detail? I got lost at making a hole in one and looping it through, I just can’t picture it.
Here is the link that explains it https://www.craftstylish.com/item/39345/how-to-crochet-a-rug-out-of-t-shirts/page/3
Love the tee shirt rug! Can’t wait to start one for myself. Will send picture when I get it completed. Thanks for tutorial. You are one smart lady!
Cinitia, thanks for the video. I am going to be weaving (on a loom) to make my rug and I am thinking that 1″ width would be better. What do you think?
Yes probably a good idea to make the strips thinner otherwise it will end up too bulky.
