How to make a crochet heart basket:
Start by making the base heart shape, I’ve used this crochet heart motif pattern designed by Andee Graves.
It’s a copyright so I can’t republish it here, but I like that Andee has included both the written pattern and a chart which really helps clarify the shape.
Because t-shirt yarn is super chunky, not all crochet heart patterns will translate well. I actually tried about 9 or 10 heart patterns and found that this one worked the best with the t-shirt yarn.
I won’t republish the pattern here but have taken some photos of the important stages for how to crochet a heart. It’s helpful to look at the steps you out if you are inexperienced at reading patterns.
You’ll find that it’s actually quite an easy crochet heart to make, once you get the hang of it.
1. Work all your dc stitches into here – last stitch of chain.
2. The stitch will get really big, you can tighten it later.
3. To finish first round, slip stitch into here.
4. First round done.
5. Treble stitches all go here.
Hint: Treble Crochet is similar to double crochet but yarn over twice in the first step.
6. You have the first bump on your heart.
7. Work your dc to create half your heart.
8. Chain one here.
Making the tip of the heart.
I found this bit a bit tricky, I hope it’s clear with the photos.
A. Before chain one.
B. Chain one then insert hook here.
C. Slip stitch and pull yarn through
D. You have the little point on your heart
9. Continue making the other half of the heart shape
10. To close heart shape slip stitch into here.
11. Your base is complete.
12. Chain one then sc (single crochet into every stitch) to start building up sides of basket.
Top tip: Make different shaped crochet baskets by using different shaped bases. Square, round, oval or hexi all work great, just sc with no increases and the wall of your baskets will start to build up.
To make the sides of this heart basket you will need 3 rounds of sc. Any more and you start to lose the heart shape.
13 & 14. This is the first round of sc, see how the sides are starting to curve up.
15. After 3 rounds of sc.
16. Slip stitch and weave in end.
All done!
These crochet heart baskets are really fun to make and don’t use much yarn. You can make several baskets with one cone of t-shirt yarn.
What will you store in your sweet crochet heart baskets?

So cute! I will make them for my little girl’s birthday as souvenirs with candys inside. Thanks a lot
Such a great idea! Glad my little heart pattern was helpful to you for the base of this basket.
Thank you Andee, I hope you have had lots of lovely visitors pop over to your blog.
Thanks a lot for this wonderful inspiration! I translated the instructions in French and had real fun making it 🙂
Great to hear 🙂
Love these so much I will be sharing them on may blog 🙂 Thank you for such a wonderfully clear pattern.
Thank you so much for the clear and detailed instructions.I did struggle a bit (not being very experienced ) but managed to get there in the end- the only bit I couldn’t figure out was how to tighten that first stitch that all the initial dcs go into that did indeed become huge on mine- I was left with a basket with a hole in the middle! I ended up weaving the end over it so it is ok but means I lost the beautiful pattern of the base a bit. If you have time would you be able to explain when and how to tighten that stitch. Thanks again- I had fun, it was great practise and I enjoyed working with the zpagetti- great for beginners as you can see the different stitches clearly.
love those cute hats!
Yes that first stitch can get very large. I try to leave a big tail when i start and then gently pull the stich closed. There should be a bit of movement there depending on how you start your first chain.
Otherwise you can try a magic ring?

Hi Cintia,
These little baskets are so adorable – thank you for sharing the how-to here in your post. Meanwhile I have already made four of those. One included a perfume bottle for my cousin, another one two tickets for the musical Mamma Mia for my parents, one was just given as a basket for my grandma and the fourth one was a money gift for a friend of mine. Regarding the latter you can find a related post (in German 😛 ) on my blog.
All the best, Melanie
You sound like an awesome friend to have.
Thank you, I hope so.
How lovely, i.m franchement and i have to translate, thank You so much for sharing.
How about a complete vidéo tutorial?
Hi Elodie, I’d love to but I don’t have time to make a video at the moment, Hopefully I’ve included enough step by step pictures. Thanks for the suggestions.
What other yarn could one use if they don’t have access to buy the zpagetti yarn? Wanted to make one for my Valentine secret pal. Thanks
Hi Stacey, you could use 2-3 strands of chunky yarn. It will work for any yarn gauge as long as the tension is very tight so choose your hook to suit. The thinner the yarn the smaller the basket. Hope that makes sense.
These are so cute! These crochet heart shaped baskets would be so cute as a DIY gift or a great craft for teens to sell on Etsy!
